acecard Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 (edited) You will need a minimum of 75ah and preferably 90ah to cover the winter.Having said that, I am surprised that your new 61ah battery is dead after 36hours in current mild conditions. Do you have a constant significant drain on it?What is its cca (cold cranking) - maybe it appears dead as not sufficient turning power. Edited November 19, 2012 by acecard Quote

sparky Paul Posted November 19, 2012 Report Posted November 19, 2012 A 61AH battery sounds like a 075 (Varta D59) or similar, probably the minimum you want on a diesel galaxy. However, as acecard says above, if the battery is in good working order, it shouldn't go flat. Either something is draining it, or the battery is kaput... even if the battery is nearly new, I would always suspect battery first if the problem arises after the first really cold nights. Quote

It can be a poor connection if its not been twisted in properly or if some dirt was left in contacts if its been replaced. They do however sometimes go dim rather than failing outright - happened to me twice. If you're going to change it, get some plasters for your fingers and keep the kids out of earshot! 540 will be the cca - unsure of the minimum required for diesel gal, but in excess of 700 is commonly quoted so it may be on the lean side - anyhow as sparky said, battery needs to be tested Edited November 19, 2012 by acecard Quote

hot Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 Galaxys are prone to the fusebox burning out which could cause poor starting, its worth a look Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 You say that it is a new battery. Is this because you have fitted it or were you told or assumed that it had been fitted just before you bought it? Two things to consider-If you fitted it you may have an inherited situation in that the car was sold because of a troublesome discharge problem. If it was fitted before you bought it it may have been discharged and left for a day or two before purchase in which case it is probably damaged. It may be worth charging it fully and left with a headlamp bulb connected across it as a load with the battery disconnected in order to check it's capacity. I shouldn't recommend a full discharge but a 60W (5A) should give a half discharge after 5/6 hours and the battery should still hold 12V and start the engine if it is any good. This is not a foolproof check but it may give a reasonably quick way of determining if it is worth trying a new battery. It is not unusual to find that a car which has been sitting in a showroom for a while has been sitting with a fully discharged battery for long enough to wreck it and many still believe that it is possible to recharge it and all will be fine.
